ROLE OF WOMEN

In ancient and medieval times human society was male-dominated. women was considered inferior to man and had to remain subordinate to and dependent on man. Her proper place was home and especially the kitchen and her main duty was to look after the household work

In the early societies there was demarcation between man's work and women's work in society but the demarcation did not mean discrimination against women. It was due to a division of labor between man and women. This division of labour was the natural result of women's delicate body, her emotional make up and her natural role of motherhood. But with the passage of time such a division gave man economic superiority. Economic superiority of man led to subordination of women and her inferior status.

With the beginning of industrialisation there began the struggle for the emancipation of women. Women came out of their homes and began to take part in the decision making. In Europe and America women liberation memento (women's lib) has succeeded in winning freedom and equality for women who now enjoy equal status with men in society.

In India women occupied equal status with men during the yedic period. Learned  women like Ghosha, Lopanmdra, Maitreya and Gargi were, respected and, Jhey enjoyed an Honorable  in society. But subsequently the position of women began to worsen. It was the worst during the period of Muslim rule. But with the beginning of English education women's status has been improving. Today we find Indian women working shoulder to shoulder with men in almost all walks of life.

results of the university examinations show that women have fared far better than men in almost all branches of learning. If this trend continues, a day is not far when 'the weaker sex' will dominate almost all walks of life and occupy the topmost positions.
